ABOUT THE PROGRAM

IRC First Things First is an educational program for refugee mothers and their preschool children. Classes are held in East San Diego , Monday thru Thursday from 9 A.M. to 12. The goal of First Things First is to actively engage refugee women in their new community and prepare young children for success in the American school system. Our students are Somali, Sudanese, Ethiopian, and Eritrean.

History of First Things First
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) implemented the First Things First in 1995. Since the program's inception, over 400 women and 500 children have received these exceptional services.

Of the First Things First graduates, an average of 25% obtain employment and 40% continue their education at local community colleges or universities.

Founded in 1933 at the suggestion of Albert Einstein, the IRC is the leading nonsectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The IRC is committed to freedom, human dignity, and self-reliance.
