Mothers at First Things First learning English. Many mothers attending our school have never had the opportunity to learn to read or write in English. First Things First Staff conduct home visits to help newly arrived families in addressing urgent issues, such as scheduling doctorÕs appointments, checking immunization updates, and calling to receive services from other community-based organizations.

Here is Salado, one of our Somali Bantu students. She wants to learn English so to get a job and help her children in school.
The Somali Bantu are an ethnic minority from Somalia. The IRC San Diego has resettled 120 Somali Bantu family members since October 2004.

Many
refugee women want to go to school but are unable to attend because they
can't afford to buy a bus pass. $60 will allow a mother and child the
opportunity to attend a month of classes.
